Surprise findings on what women want– Is a woman’s place still in the house?

Take a guess on this: Do women want a bigger house or are they more interested in outside space? Conventional wisdom used to peg women to the indoors. Take for example the popular saying, “A woman’s place is in the house.” Well, looks like a lot of women, are saying, “not so fast”. A new study just released asked men and women if they preferred a bigger home and smaller yard or vice versa. Sixty-two percent of women prefer bigger yards and smaller homes, compared to only 52% of men who said bigger yards are more preferable. The age of mega-mansions on small lots may have had their day pass as overall both men and women are trending toward wanting bigger yards and smaller homes.

Why should you care? Two words: resale value. As greater numbers of people are moving more of their lives to their outdoor spaces, so creating a turnkey environment where potential buyers can land on a ready-to-relax outdoor space can lead to quicker sales with better prices.

What kinds of adds could you make to enjoy your outside space more and at the same time make your home more attractive to homebuyers? Some examples include outside living rooms, retractable floor-to-ceiling walls that open to outdoors as well as outdoor fireplaces and firepits. Fruit trees and vegetable gardens are also making a big comeback. Making the outdoors like an extension of the house rather than a separate space is the current crazily popular trend. Outdoor pizza ovens also continue to gain popularity. Conventional pool displays are still popular, but buyers still want additional space to mingle outdoors outside of the pool so be congnizant of that.

In short, it is an exciting time for community building as homeowners and homebuyers are doing everything they can to maximize their time in their homes.
